I think that what we are learning in these two cases is that with the present state of medicine, the treatment can be worse than the disease.

More testing doesn't always save money. It's a tight situation with a lot of variables. If we follow the UHC nations there WILL be a value placed on life. The fans of UHC can't have it both ways, which is my usual economic complaint about lefties.

The whole Roosevelt house of cards is going to fall apart just in time to fark me. Medicare and then SS.

Not the treatment, just the massively costly screening process.

Well, OK the invasive biopsies due to false positives.

We're talkling sales of insurance between states...HUGE differences.

Sure...minimum, sane, logical, anti-trust style regs would be great.

That's not what state regs are really about.

Well yes, but something will be put in its place. Congress won't address any of this until the very last moment, then they will do something.

I think all the current wrangling is about establishing what items will be on the agenda when it comes time to make the hard choices.

The treatments for prostate cancer are highly problematic too. It turns out they satisfy a desire to "do something" about the cancer, but don't really extend life expectancy.

I'm glad you got in touch.

That was nice.

She was the generous one. At her time of grief. To respond to a nobody.

I responded:

"He spoke often and proudly of you all. His grandson big time.

His pride came from you all, more than himself.

We all will dearly miss him.

You all more so of course.

The whole deal is crazy, my dear.

No sense to it."

And no more sense to it as time goes by.

QUOTE
Major Nidal Hasan, charged with killing 13 in the Fort Hood shooting spree, is paralyzed from the chest down and is not a flight risk, said his defense attorney after a hearing before a military magistrate in Hasan's hospital room Saturday. The accused Fort Hood shooter had his first court hearing in the intensive care unit of a San Antonio hospital at 1 p.m. His status has now been changed from pre-trial restriction to pre-trial confinement, meaning that he will be confined until his court martial.

The military magistrate ruled that Hasan will stay at Brooke Army Medical Center for now, but the military has the option of moving him to another medical facility or to jail. According to defense attorney John Galligan, Hasan is paralyzed from the chest down, is incontinent and "in severe pain."

"He is an individual in need of constant medical attention," Galligan said. "He has no sensation from his chest down."

Good shot on the cop's part. Justice in it's own way. "severe pain" sounds appropriate.

Cahill opposed the DP. Like me.

In this case in particular, the wretch should live a long dismal life in solitary. Deserves incontinent and "in severe pain" for a long long life. Eternity would be good even if not possible.

We are going to be spending $250k per year to tend to this fellow when that money would be far better spent caring for someone who didn't murder 13 and maim 30.

Well yes, but something will be put in its place.

An outhouse of cards.

I expect at least one more boom in my lifetime. Will have to take max advantage of it if it happens.

If not I'll live on cold beans and tuna in a one room place like I did in college.

You might get lucky and have a wealthy widow decide you are just the thing to spice up her life.

Happened to a buddy of mine.

She kept on pursuing him until he just couldn't say no anymore.

The older I get the better the odds are. Good thing I'm not like those guys that only like girls in their 20s.

Yep, shopping in one's own age group is a lot more realistic.
