I'm currently reading "Intelligence Matters" by Bob Graham, The Family by Kitty Kelley, and The Politics of Truth by Joe Wilson. Actually only got half through the latter and lent it to my sister. Was getting bogged down in all the African countries.

Going to the library today. The Graham book sounds like it might be interesting. I prefer books that boil things down for me and make them interesting. Eat the Rich and Parliament of Whores by PJ O' Rourke are prime examples. Not too much propaganda, but a viewpoint from the local bar or office rather than research off the net. PJ always gets most of his good stuff from the field.

I don't bother reading any nonfiction political books unless they are well and verifiably sourced. That 's why I don't read Palast, for instance, or Michael Moore (although I am a Moore fan, as he is a true American hero).

Anyone who supports Bush should read Kitty Kelley's book, well sourced information about the Bush dynasty that no one hears from the media.

For instance, I had no idea that the family, dating back to the early 1900s were so rich, successful, and powerful socially connected people -- all Yale, all the time, social register. They just seem like such barbarians.

Then again, Prescott's grandmother wrote that he had a problem with "fooling." Then Kelley cites evidence how that hasn't changed through the generations.

Just fooling should be GWBush's mantra.

Oh yeah, the old cowboy right. Cowboy in a Rolls -- he can't even ride a horse.
Bart Katz
Yeah, that Kitty is a realy reputable source. That's been proved before.

For those who lean to the SF/Fantasy side I can recommend:

Kevin Anderson's, Saga of the Seven Suns series (read first 2 so far),

and

Katherine Kurtz's, St. Patrick's Gargoyle.

Just recent reading.
Art.
Been reading Ann Coulter's Slander and it is very good. In spite of what propagandists say it is extensively end-noted from reliable sources.

Especially interesting is the part about how many liberal authors get great coverage and huge advances despite selling at lower levels than conservatives. Puts people like Michael Moore in the category of the rich non-workers they despise so much.

But at least we end up getting Coulter to come to town for little or nothing.
Catharsis
A book which changed my life. "the Miseducation of the Negro" by Carter G. Woodson. The auther lived from the late 1800's till 1950, was Black, held a few collage degrees, and wrote fourteen books, that I know of.
The title I've suggested is out of print (sorry) but may be found at Powells I think.
(That should be powellsbooks.com or some variation) I'm nothing if not vague.
Anyway, in that book the author gave me a personal definition of equality-equality is when two people share equally in the task at hand.
Reading the first two chapters was like being beaten Tyson, but in the end I found hope for a brighter day.

Underwear Goes Inside The Pants

Why is marijuana not legal? Why is marijuana not legal?
It's a natural plant that grows in the dirt.
Do you know what's not natural?
80 year old dudes with hard-ons. That's not natural.
But we got pills for that.
We're dedicating all our medical resources to keeping the old guys erect,
but we're putting people in jail for something that grows in the dirt?

You know we have more prescription drugs now.
Every commercial that comes on TV is a prescription drug ad.
I can't watch TV for four minutes without thinking I have five serious diseases.
Like: "Do you ever wake up tired in the morning?"
Oh my god I have this, write this down. Whatever it is, I have it.
Half the time I don't even know what the commercial is:
people running in fields or flying kites or swimming in the ocean.
I'm like that is the greatest disease ever. How do you get that?
That disease comes with a hot chick and a puppy.

The schools now: It is all about self-esteem in the schools now.
Build the kids' self-esteem, make them feel good about themselves.
If everybody grows up with high self-esteem, who is going to dance in our strip clubs?
What's going to happen to our porno industry?
These women don't just grown on trees.
It takes lots of drunk dads missing dance recitals before you decide to blow a goat on the internet for fifty bucks.
And if that disappears, where does that leave me on a Friday night with my new high speed connection?

Masterminds are another word that comes up all the time.
You keep hearing about these terrorists masterminds that get killed in the middle east.
Terrorists masterminds.
Mastermind is sort of a lofty way to describe what these guys do, don't you think?
They're not masterminds.
"OK, you take bomb, right? And you put in your backpack. And you get on bus and you blow yourself up. Alright?"
"Why do I have to blow myself up? Why can't I just:"
"Who's the farking mastermind here? Me or you?"

Americans, let's face it: We've been a spoiled country for a long time.
Do you know what the number one health risk in America is?
Obesity. They say we're in the middle of an obesity epidemic.
An epidemic like it is polio. Like we'll be telling our grand kids about it one day.
The Great Obesity Epidemic of 2004.
"How'd you get through it grandpa?"
"Oh, it was horrible Johnny, there was cheesecake and pork chops everywhere."

Nobody knows why were getting fatter? Look at our lifestyle.
I'll sit at a drive thru.
I'll sit there behind fifteen other cars instead of getting up to make the eight foot walk to the totally empty counter.
Everything is mega meal, super sized. Want biggie fries, super sized, want to go large.
You want to have thirty burgers for a nickel you fat mother farker. There's room in the back. Take it!
Want a 55 gallon drum of Coke with that? It's only three more cents.

Sometimes you have to suffer a little bit in your youth to motivate yourself to succeed in later life.
Do you think if Bill Gates got laid in high school, do you think there'd be a Microsoft?
Of course not.
You got to spend a long time in your own locker with your underwear shoved up your ass before you start to think,
"You'll see. I'm going to take of the world of computers! I'll show them."

We're in one of the richest countries in the world,
but the minimum wage is lower than it was thirty five years ago.
There are homeless people everywhere.
This homeless guy asked me for money the other day.
I was about to give it to him and then I thought he was going to use it on drugs or alcohol.
And then I thought, that's what I'm going to use it on.
Why am I judging this poor bastard.
People love to judge homeless guys. Like if you give them money they're just going to waste it.
Well, he lives in a box, what do you want him to do? Save it up and buy a wall unit?
Take a little run to the store for a throw rug and a CD rack? He's homeless.
I walked behind this guy the other day.
A homeless guy asked him for money.
He looks right at the homeless guy and says why don't you go get a job you bum.
People always say that to homeless guys like it is so easy.
This homeless guy was wearing his underwear outside his pants.
Outside his pants. I'm guessing his resume isn't all up to date.
I'm predicting some problems during the interview process.
I'm pretty sure even McDonalds has a "underwear goes inside the pants" policy.
Not that they enforce it really strictly, but technically I'm sure it is on the books.

LOL that "song" has been in heavy rotation on the alternative/rock radio stations here for months...

I guess I gotta check out some "alternative rock" stations. Most of what I've heard is more like the "alternative TO rock". Slipknot? I think not.

I've read more than a few Harry Turtledove alternate history books but I recently found "The Last Ship" by William Brinkley to leave ya wanting another. Much along a story line like "On the Beach" by Nevil Shute which was made into a movie and I believe starred Gregory Peck. Neither are bad reads. About post WWIII. Actually, "On the Beach" will show it's era of print with it's 1950s vocabulary. wink.gif

Somebody dusted off the books thread. smile.gif

I remember my Mom telling me about On the Beach when I was a kid. Sounded kind of creepy.

I believe Newt has an alternate history of the civil war out. I suppose the south wins. sad.gif

There also used to be a series, Sliders, that I think dealt with alternate histories, but it got cancelled before I saw but one show.

Just trying to keep some of the less volatile treads going. smile.gif

Yeah, the Harry Turtledove books have the interaction of revised history hinging on if the south had won and it's ripple effect on through a revised history leading to Germany winning WWII. He also went harder SciFi with a series involving an invasion of a slightly more advanced alien race during the height of WWII and it's ramifications.

I like history and find stories playing with it interesting.

"Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield, was of interest. It's a story based on the last stand of a small band of Greeks, primarily composed of 300 Spartans against the might of a Persian Army several hundred strong at the pass of Thermopolis. As recorded, the Greeks again lose this battle to eventually win the war, but it's a good read. wink.gif

Good movie. The 300 Spartans.

Everyone else refused to postpone the party, so the 300 had to hold them off until the hangover cures kicked in.

Yeah, I have a copy of that movie. The acting was woody but the storyline was great to a highly impressionable young boy who ate it up. rolleyes.gif

Just verified that the movie "On The Beach" did star Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire and Anthony Perkins. Big names for a SciFi.

Yeah.. As a kid I was impressed with the scenes. Now I can see how they used camera angles to give the illusion of numbers. I can imagine a similar scene with the assistance of computer aided special effects much like in Lords of the Ring and similar movies, now that would be something. smile.gif

Yeah I don't think Alexander will end up in my collection. Troy was another using alot of computer processing.

On a side note, didn't Richard Burton play Alexander some time back? I know he played Anthony but the Alexander role nags at me. Guess I'll have to google his roles.

In the meanwhile, I have some honey-dos to get at.

I think maybe he did. Tell us what you find. I should probably get back to work myself.

Yep. Richard Burton as Alexander, 1956 film Alexander The Great, see: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048937/
Arturo_Vandelay
Burton didn't cut it as Alexander. Too old, too wimpy.

I didn't see Troy, I already knew how it turned out. With the computer abilities available now it's sad the best war movie in the last five years is a fantasy.

Yeah, but your also knew how the battle at Thermopolis came out and you watched the movie, didn't ya. Give Troy a go now that it's a rental or catch it on cable. Really good special effects and battle scenes. The Kingdon of Heaven isn't bad either. smile.gif

For those of us that like military science fiction, I've finished reading three by Joe Buff. Straights of Power, Tidal Rip and Crush Depth. You guessed it. Submarine warfare with Seal missions galore. Another WWIII type scenario where Boer-led reactionaries take over S. Africa and join forces with a Germany that's been taken over by ultra-nationalists and begin a campaign of conquering Europe and Africa with the U.S. barely holding on. Lots of action and suspense backed up with technical know-how on the part of the author. Much along the lines of Michael DiMercurio's submarine warfare fiction books. smile.gif

I loved Kingdom of Heaven. I just don't see the battle of Troy as being climactic, though when my Netflix turns back on I may give it a shot. I think a good Hannibal movie might fly in the age of insurgency and rebellion. Cannae would make a great battle scene that could actually be tactically interesting.

Cowpens, the American Cannae would be a good possibility too.

The remake of the Four Feathers had a couple good battle scenes.

I love the story of Hannibal. Probably one of histories most brilliant military tactician who’s efforts for his country went for naught and were squandered by the Carthaginian politicians of the time to their demise as well.

I can just remember an old Black and White movie with Romans fighting an army with Elephants. Then again it could’ve been color. We had an old vacuum tube black and white T.V. well into the early seventies.

Okay. Found it and it was color to boot. Go figure.

QUOTE
Hannibal (1960)
Victor Mature strains his breastplate as the Carthaginian general who drove an armada of elephants over the Alps as part of his campaign against the legions of Rome (or was it Syracuse?) in this thrilling sword-and-sandal actioner from Italy. With Rita Gam, Gabriele Ferzetti; look for Terence Hill and Bud Spencer.

I had almost convinced myself that it starred Richard Egan. smile.gif

There were also plans for a remake last year starring Vin Diesel but I haven’t seen it out yet.

Cool, Vin's kind of grown on me. He reminds me too much of a friend and classmate from second grade some kids called "monkey face".

I remember Vic Mature. A good action star.

I'd like to see more historical movies that really explain the tactics of their times. Something like Master and Commander with more ship to ship combat would be interesting. Where's Errol Flynn when you need him?

Just finished "MEG" by Steve Alten, about a Carcharodon megaldon, Grand-daddy of the Great White shark. Good read and now I have to go buy the other two parts. Couldn't put it down for long between honey-dos.

I also read a really good military space combat Sci-Fi called "The Lost Fleet - Dauntless" by Jack Campbell, exceptionally well written. Don't buy it until January or February of 07 because you'll be extremely disappointed to find out that the second book in this series is not due out until 02/07.
