I would note, however, that about half the gay community feels it's essential to "out" prominent gays, and refer openly gay family member of prominent people (especially anti-gay prominent people). The rationale is that it's important to drive home the point that gays aren't some small fringe "lifestyle", but ordinary people, sons and daughters and aunts and uncles and cousins, and that almost everyone knows someone who's gay who's a pretty much "normal" person.

It may not be fair, but this leads them to be, from the resume perspective, down a notch, with less overall experience and less perception as "dedicated" to their careers. When you match comparable resumes, it ends up that women with similar careers make within a few percent of what a man with an equivalent career does.

There is also the issue of the "pink collar ghetto"--the reality that women often gravitate to "jobs" rather than "careers" because they need the predictable schedules and the flexibility to take time off, and these jobs tend to be considered less responsible, and therefore less well paid, in the sense that the presence/absence of the employee is less critical to the company. That is, an absence can be covered by another, similar (and therefore regarded as interchangeable) employee.

It may not be fair, but employers have every right to consider such factors in hiring and pay.

That has not been my experience, nor the experience of other women I know Judy.

I took 5 weeks off to have the lil monkey.

My boss begged me to come back and we needed the money.

I still make less than men I know although I have won more design awards.

I guess it depends on the industry

Well for a "flip flopper" Kerry sure was steady and consistent in each of the debates while bush had the same Alfred E Neuman stupid look and a different personality each time.

It was a night of numbers and statistics and of course bush looked like the moron that he is. I still would love it if bush tried once to say what he has done rather to try to say whay Kerry hasnt done. Or has done, whichever way they need to spin it.
