Fear and Laptops on the Campaign Trail

Nine blocks north of Madison Square Garden, next door to the Emerging Artists Theater, where posters advertised ''The Gay Naked Play'' (''Now With More Nudity''), the bloggers were up and running. It was Republican National Convention week in New York City, and they had taken over a performance space called the Tank. A homeless guy sat at the entrance with a bag of cans at his feet, a crocheted cap on his head and his chin in his hand. To reach the Tank, you had to cross a crummy little courtyard with white plastic patio furniture and half a motorcycle strung with lights and strewn with flowers, beneath a plywood sign that said, ''Ronald Reagan Memorial Fountain.''

I have an email address for Coco and have a plan to send him one invite here, but not from me. I am reticent to bother someone who wanted their email private, but coco didn't like Yahoo and likely will never know we're here without a special effort. Same goes for a couple others.

Good topic idea. I was thinking of deleting the test forum soon and adding one for board issues, suggestions, personal stuff and things non "topic" oriented.

Months? Sheesh! It's not like the cable companies don't fund them. Soon we probably need to reach a concensus on how we want this place to be. I notice we have a lot of posts, even without people like elredon and Eddie.

I was terrified at first that if people came around a few times and there was nobody here they just wouldn't come back. I think I ended up just hanging around more than I might otherwise. Loclynn is going to make a few more invites.

Hopefully we can keep this interesting without the new blood a C-Span might bring in.(come to think of it there wasn't much)

Politics and sleaze envelop Orlando
As the presidential campaign approaches its showdown, the Republicans in the state run by George Bush's brother are up to their tricks again.

This is a long article but it is disturbing to say the least. What will the parties do to win? Anything?

http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americ...sp?story=566037

<snip>

The intrigue began with Mr Dyer's election last March. It was a two-round election, but Mr Dyer finished with just over the 50 per cent threshold needed to avoid a run-off. His closest opponent, a Republican called Ken Mulvaney, cried foul, saying the 234-vote margin putting Mr Dyer over the threshold was fraudulent.

Since Mr Mulvaney's campaign manager was a prominent local talk-radio host called Doug Guetzloe, his allegations had a wide airing. But most of them, if not all, were demonstrably untrue. Mr Guetzloe claimed illegal absentee votes had been faxed into the elections supervisor's office, but the office accepts only originals. He also said people had been paid for their votes, but offered no evidence of this.

<snip>

Although the FDLE's public statements have been less than transparent, it appears to have relied on a paragraph in the Florida statute books which says it is illegal to receive or offer "something of value" for absentee ballots. Mr Thomas and his organisation, the Orlando Voters' League, have not been accused of paying for votes, but they have acknowledged paying the 37-cent postage for some people's absentee ballots. Mr Thomas, who received $10,000 from the Dyer campaign for his get-out-the-vote efforts, has also acknowledged paying his volunteers between $100 and $150 for petrol and other expenses over the campaign season.

The allegations seem particularly absurd because such practices are absolutely par for the course for both parties. "A 37-cent postage stamp is a very interesting definition of racketeering," Mr Egan said. "Now, it's well known that most absentee ballots come out of the white community ... I seriously doubt the police would behave in the same way in a white community."

As it happens, Mr Thomas had been been hired before by Republican candidates to perform exactly the same services he provided for Mr Dyer, without falling foul of the law. Among his past clients are two names with particular resonance in the 2004 presidential race. One is Mel Martinez, the Bush administration's outgoing Housing Secretary who is now running for the Florida Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Democrat, Bob Graham. (Mr Thomas helped Mr Martinez run for chair of the Orange County commission a few years ago.) And the other is Glenda Hood, who was mayor of Orlando for 12 years before being appointed Jeb Bush's Secretary of State, the office responsible for running Florida's elections.

He [Carter] accused Florida Secretary of State Glenda Hood, a Republican, of trying to get the name of independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader included on the state ballot, knowing he might divert Democrat votes.

I don't see how the above has anything to do with Carter's work around the world to ensure fair and honest elections. In law, there's no such thing as "Democrat voters". Voters are voters, and that's that. I also like the phrasing "knowing he might divert Democrat votes". So long as "knowing" is in there, I guess.
Bart Katz
From that quote, one could surmise that Carter is in collusion with the democrats in trying to keep Nader off the ballot. This, regardless, in spite of his good works in other countrys' elections, and his habitat for humanity, Carter Center, etc etc.
Art.
Interesting article. The politics of voting are just like other politics, sides jockeying for advantage. If Carter wants to worry about vote fraud I'd hope he would also look into all the illegals voting in other states besides Florida. Just because Florida swung the last election doesn't make it the only state in the union with serious voting problems. Up until now a lot of it was absentee ballot oriented, not we can add in electronic voting.

I'd prefer fix it all, rather than allow each side to work to fix voting only where it benefits them.
Here we have paper scanned ballots after using the infamous butterfly ballot for years.

As great as it is to have election monitors around the world I always got the feeling that Carter had a preference as to the winner and he travelled to make sure the left got treated fairly. My own view might be too much shaped by PJ O'Rourke's trip to Nicaragua, where he saw all sorts of American lefties partying in expectation of an Ortega victory.

I'm sure he cares about votes being counted, I'm just afraid he cares a bit more that certain votes are counted.
Bart Katz
So it's ok for Carter to say he wants fair elections, and at the same time try to help the dems keep Nader off the ballot? That's "ethics" for you.

There will still be skeptics, probably for good reason.

Moveon.org recently organizing rallies in 19 states, including Wisconsin, to protest electronic voting. As part of its "computer ate my vote" campaign, moveon.org is promoting state and federal legislation that would require electronic ballot boxes to issue a paper receipt. The federal legislation has the backing of Wisconsin Reps. Ron Kind (D-La Crosse) and Tom Petri (R-Fond du Lac).

Skeptics are right to worry about computer voting. The systems are prone to software bugs, frauds and hackers. However, moveon.org is pursuing the wrong solution because paper receipts could create a false sense of security that computer voting is honest and accurate. The problem isn't the lack of a paper trail; it's lack of transparency.

Nader was gunning for the Democrats from the beginning, it's only been recently that he's complaining about both parties equally and saying publicly that he isn't accepting funds from Republican groups.

He didn't deny that when he was debating Dean.  Not at all.

He wants a fight, he should be more prepared.  Democrats won't just sit there and accept a pie in the face.

Manufacturers of computer voting machines claim their counting software as proprietary information, which means that the public can't verify how the software is programmed and monitored. Imagine for example, if a town hired a private vendor to count paper ballots in a locked room and then destroyed the ballots before the public could examine them. That's exactly what computer voting does, and it will happen this fall on a massive scale. Between eight to 10 percent of all ballots nationwide will be conducted by computer vote, and the percentage is much higher in battleground states like Ohio and Florida.

Florida vote

In an article in the Washington Post newspaper, Mr Carter, a Democrat, said that he and ex-President Gerald Ford, a Republican, had been asked to draw up recommendations for changes after the last vote in Florida was marred by arguments over the counting of ballots.

Mr Carter said the reforms they came up with had still not been implemented.

He accused Florida Secretary of State Glenda Hood, a Republican, of trying to get the name of independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader included on the state ballot, knowing he might divert Democrat votes.

He also said: "A fumbling attempt has been made recently to disqualify 22,000 African Americans (likely Democrats), but only 61 Hispanics (likely Republicans), as alleged felons."

Mr Carter said Florida Governor Jeb Bush - brother of the president - had "taken no steps to correct these departures from principles of fair and equal treatment or to prevent them in the future".

Florida Article

"It is unconscionable to perpetuate fraudulent or biased electoral practices in any nation," he added.

"With reforms unlikely at this late stage of the election, perhaps the only recourse will be to focus maximum public scrutiny on the suspicious process in Florida."

The entire Bush family needs to be rounded up and thrown in jail, forever.

Mr Carter is full of poop on this first statement, and in the second he's playing the same game as the rest of the dems in trying to keep Nader off the ballot.

Therfore, IMHO, Carter has no business trying to say he's impartial.

I think they are concentrating on what can be done in the next 5 weeks, AV.

As lioness has pointed out, the bigger problem is the central tabulation software that is open to hacking regardless of whether all the votes have receipts or not.

I think awareness, in and of itself is quite valuable. It may be all we have.

Nothing wrong with nice. If Loclynns email brings in some more old timers maybe it will get even more "nice". Around 300 posts a day as is. My first board was like this, you have to get used to waiting a bit longer than a big board, but your posts aren't left in the dust either.

Flood of New Voters Signing Up

24 minutes ago Politics - AP

By ROBERT TANNER, AP National Writer

New voters are flooding local election offices with paperwork, registering in significantly higher numbers than four years ago as attention to the presidential election runs high and an array of activist groups recruit would-be voters who could prove critical come Nov. 2.

The chances, therefore, that polls based on "likely voters" are going to miss the actual vote are pretty high.

This is assuming that new registered voters cast their votes.

Good point on a purely analytical note. I wonder if anyone is studying who and where the new voters are in depth.
