OK, I'll go first. The one with Clint Eastwood and cows.
Russ Logan
Any scene with "Wishbone" (Paul Brinegar). One of my favorite characters in a western. The other: Jedidiah Nightlinger (Roscoe Lee Browne) - in The Cowboys.
lil bart
Wishbone was great. Mr. Favor wasn't exactly a slouch. And everything I know about anthrax I learned on Rawhide.

Russ Logan
My late father liked many of the western genre heroes but one of his favorite cowboy actors was a guy he always called "Toothy" after a character he had played once - the late, great Jack Elam. Many of those in the younger set may remember him as the crazed proctologist in the Cannonball movies (the Burt Reynolds - Dom DeLouise vehicles (pun intended)).
lil bart
Your father had good taste. Jack Elam was one GREAT character actor. Don't make 'em like that anymore.
lil bart
I'd send up a call for another great western, but they'd stuff it with these pretty little children who populate every television show now, and make them all just ... well, dumb.

I like the one where they get sent ahead to scout and help a girl in trouble.

Every once in while Rowdy Yates will get into a little jam due to his temper.

We watched Rawhide as a family back in the day, gathered around the old B&W with at least one light left on as prescribed by my mom, so we didn’t ruin our eyes.

I guess Bonanza was the next big thing for a while, but by then, I was getting a little old for westerns. My little sister, however, took up Hoss as her personal hero. We gave her a terrible time about it. She must have been about five.

In later life she favored the Michael Landon or Parnell Roberts type a bit more.
Arturo_Vandelay
I still catch Bonanza on the weekend sometimes. I think the old westerns teach some good lessons and the good guys are expected to live up to certain standards.

A code, as it were.

Yes, I agree that there were some great parables.
Arturo_Vandelay
How about Roger Moore as a Maverick brother? Saw one of those a little ways back.

I most certainly did, but it lacked the alliterative affect. laugh.gif

I’ve been trying to think what Rawhide was about, but I think I have it confused with Wagon Train.

What did the horse look like? That might jog this memory. unsure.gif
I liked Palladin.(sp)

"Head'm up, move'm out..get them dawgies rollin'...Rawhide!"

<crack o'the whip>

Which one, Rawhide, or Wagon Train, had Gabby Hayes in it?

Arturo_Vandelay
Wagon train? I've seen both on the Hallmark channel lately, but I don't recall Gabby.

I Googled The Gabster...

Apparently, he was in neither.

However, he did have his own TV show..circa 1950-54, where he'd introduce/host the showings of Westerns...

I think the old grizzled cook was kind of Gabby-like. Maybe that's the character you were thinking of.
Arturo_Vandelay
Georgr? Looks like he needs to buy a vowel.
csh
Gabby Hayes --> Gene Autry? mellow.gif
Arturo_Vandelay
I'm pretty sure Gabby singing would be a VERY VERY bad thing.
csh
Oops…wasn’t Gabby Hays on the Gene Autry show? unsure.gif

I only know one Zonie that moved to Texas and he moved back. Lived in Fort Worth and said the women were the best in the US. Better than California.(which I think is overrated)

The men are bowlegged, yes; it is required. The wimmins wear their hair big so the men will swagger over cuz it is so kewl to see a tight-jeaned, skinny bowlegged swagger.

We'll be ready for a field trip in no time. smile.gif
