Any scene with "Wishbone" (Paul Brinegar). One of my favorite characters in a western. The other: Jedidiah Nightlinger (Roscoe Lee Browne) - in The Cowboys.

Wishbone was great. Mr. Favor wasn't exactly a slouch. And everything I know about anthrax I learned on Rawhide.

My late father liked many of the western genre heroes but one of his favorite cowboy actors was a guy he always called "Toothy" after a character he had played once - the late, great Jack Elam. Many of those in the younger set may remember him as the crazed proctologist in the Cannonball movies (the Burt Reynolds - Dom DeLouise vehicles (pun intended)).

Your father had good taste. Jack Elam was one GREAT character actor. Don't make 'em like that anymore.

I'd send up a call for another great western, but they'd stuff it with these pretty little children who populate every television show now, and make them all just ... well, dumb.

We watched Rawhide as a family back in the day, gathered around the old B&W with at least one light left on as prescribed by my mom, so we didn’t ruin our eyes.
I guess Bonanza was the next big thing for a while, but by then, I was getting a little old for westerns. My little sister, however, took up Hoss as her personal hero. We gave her a terrible time about it. She must have been about five.
In later life she favored the Michael Landon or Parnell Roberts type a bit more.

I still catch Bonanza on the weekend sometimes. I think the old westerns teach some good lessons and the good guys are expected to live up to certain standards.

I’ve been trying to think what Rawhide was about, but I think I have it confused with Wagon Train.
What did the horse look like? That might jog this memory.
I liked Palladin.(sp)

I Googled The Gabster...
Apparently, he was in neither.
However, he did have his
own TV show..circa 1950-54, where he'd introduce/host the showings of Westerns...

The men are bowlegged, yes; it is required. The wimmins wear their hair big so the men will swagger over cuz it is so kewl to see a tight-jeaned, skinny bowlegged swagger.
