Slow day on the boards.

Sooooo. New Topic.

Anyone have an thoughts or suggestions on where in the US is the best place
to retire to?

Haven't spent much time 'looking around', but do subsribe to the magazine 'Where to retire'.

Like to check out areas in the southern states.
Colorado may be a good choice. Sunny & low humidity...lower cost of living.

Wherever I end up.....the follow conditions must exist.

1. Area less costly than the one I live in now.
2. Good medical facilities.
3. Warm and sunny weather with warm winters.
4. Plenty of activities to see and do.
5. Not heavily populated.
6. Tax breaks for people of retirement ages. (believe or not Vermont has none)
7. More conservative politically than where I live now.

lil bart
Love the topic.

I think, however, that your Nos. 1-3 & 6, at a minimum, will prove counter-exclusive to No. 4.

I want: less costly, less money-driven & more community-driven. This means: somewhere the Californians won't go. I'll take bad weather, poor medical facilities and little (customarily thought of as) to "see or do."

Not heavily populated (presuming I am not wealthy enough to live in Manhattan) is my number one priority.
Bart Katz
Right where I live right now is hard to beat. I'd say it qualifies in all of your criteria.
Bart Katz
You can get a real good idea of cost of living differences compared to where you live now buy using the calculator here.

Thanks!

There is going to plus and minuses to anyplace.

I like the south, but not to hype on dealing with the high humidity.

I like Colorado, but it's not near the ocean.

I like California, but couldn't afford it!

Just lotsa research to do. blink.gif

Well, there is the extreme noth of California, fairly affordable.

Always entertained the notion of going to Mendocino.... Purple starfish!!!! seen them myself.
lil bart
Mendocino? Ohmygawd, it's flakier than Boulder or Ashland or heaven only knows where. No, I don't think those would be gtessex's cups of brew. Of course, he did put Cali on the list. blink.gif I'd rather be dead than live in California, even the parts I know that are still just a teeny bit off the borg absorb.

lil bart
Bloomington tops the Charts!

Arturo_Vandelay
How about New Mexico? Not too populous and you could find some higher elevations to stay cool. Low humidity in the southwest. That ranks high with me since I like to do a lot of outdoor activities and HATE bugs.
lil bart
Bugs -- bad.

Humidity -- bad.

I gotta check out Nova Scotia. Not that I wanna emigrate, but that's a place I need to go to.

One could move to Mexico and live pretty well on a small budget. You can buy into the healthcare system cheap as well.

You should check out what that international-retirement link had to say about Ecuador! Made in the shade, baby.

Lots of different opinions. I guess a good place to live depends on the person. I've been through most of the US and could probably survive anywhere, but I kind of like it where I am. I think if I were going to move I'd stay in AZ and find a place just a bit higher and cooler.

AZ got a lot of nods. So did all kinds of places you either wouldn't think of, or would reject.

Had to roar at this exchange:

Don't know about the best places to live, but I can tell you that Colorado is one of the worst. The weather is terrible, it snows like you wouldn't believe. There are way too many people, everyone is unfriendly and to top it off most of the trees and plants in the state burned up last summer so it is charred and ugly here. Oh, and the bugs are horrible, too.

Please don't move here!

That "Find Your Spot" quiz is useful only in that it delineates a lot of choices, pretty simply, as far as what matters to you.

For example, I would prefer a place with cr@ppy schools. Then people with kids don't move there, and you don't have to listen to a bunch of whining. The more a place spends on schools, the more they whine. laugh.gif

How about Martinique in the French west indies? Not too expensive to buy into or live. Low utilities, cheap French wine.

Oh yeah, and nude beaches. smile.gif

Sounds good to me, though the only nude beach I've been to was a bit of a letdown.

Thought of New Mexico. Never been there.

Mentioning.....BUGS....got my attention. Anyplace that has no or few bugs will
get my consideration.

Vermont has a short summer season, and that pretty much is hampered by
bugs that bite. On any given day, you can get chewed into by bugs in the morning,
bugs in the afternoon, and bugs at night.

This is no exaggeration. Towards the end of March, I was doing some lawn work outside on a fairly warm evening. Still some snow on the ground and I get bit
by a mosquito! What's up with that! mad.gif

There's still plenty of rural area, green mountains, Tennessee River valley etc, but if you want to go into Huntsville, plenty to do, see, good food, etc. The town is pretty diverse due to people from all over the world coming to work in the aerospace industry. You can, however find relatively low priced propery in the mountains, just a few miles out of town. Low property taxes, and the state income tax isn't too bad. TVA electric power is reasonably priced. Mild winters, long summers.

I've gotten hit by a couple in the driest part of summer when I could swear there's no way they could find water to breed in. They're the perfect irritant. Here we have noceums (sp?). Can't see them except in a swarm but they will chew everything below knee level if you aren't careful.

Overall we don't have a lot of bug though.

I haven't spent a lot of time in New Mexico, but it's pretty to drive through. I sort of like it along the Rockies as you can have mountains and valleys both nearby. When it gets too hot down low you can pack up and cool off in the mountains, or ski when it's still nice down in the valley.

I understand the idea(why you can't see them unless swarming), but I've actually seen it spelled as one word. Not sure they are one genus species phylum etc or just any damn little onboxious bug laying around in the grass.
