Ugh! Work is discontinuing our GroupWise email application and moving to Outlook Express. It's an issue of money. I love GroupWise. I have all my timed tasks set to pop up reminder messages when it's time to do them. Additionally, I've modified all of the sound files to the Star Trek computer's voice. So, for instance, when an email arrives, the Star Trek computer voice informs me with "Incoming message." For a priority mail it says "Priority message incoming from Star Fleet Command." When a timed task pops up "she" says "Please Acknowledge." When someone opens one of my emails "she" says "file accessed," etc., etc., etc. I hope I can personalize Outlook Express in the same fashion. Even if I can, it's a hassle to have to figure it all out.

Ex. When one of my emails is opened: "Files Accessed"

Never liked Outlook Express. Sounds like Groupwise is pretty cool. Too bad you're losing it.

Babylon 5 is much better than Star Trek, IMO.

Of course I've seen all the originals, Next Generation and Voyager.

I got tired of Roddenberry's wife doing all the computer voices. She played a Centari prophetess on B-5. She got around.

Ever see B-5 vs Star Trek?

Okay, so I'm sitting at my computer eating my dinner, as is typical, and I come across this article:

Computer keyboards can be dirtier than a toilet: study

QUOTE
CANBERRA (Reuters Life!) - Think twice before eating those dropped crumbs off your computer keyboard -- you might as well be eating off a toilet seat, according to a new study on the amount of germs on keyboards.

A study by British consumer magazine "Which? Computing" asked a microbiologist to examine 33 keyboards in a typical London office, a toilet seat and a toilet door handle, for bugs generally found in unhygienic places.

Four keyboards were judged potential health hazards and the microbiologist recommended the removal of one keyboard as it had 150 times the pass limit of bacteria -- five times filthier than the swabbed toilet seat.

The study found that eating lunch at desks is the main cause of a bug-infested keyboard. Dropped crumbs and food encourages the growth of millions of bacteria.

Poor personal hygiene, such as not washing hands after going to the toilet, may also add to the dirtiness of keyboards.

But despite the health hazard of a dirty keyboard, a survey of 4,000 people by the magazine found one in 10 people -- or 11 percent -- never cleaned their keyboard while another two in 10 never cleaned their mouse.

Almost half -- or 46 per cent -- cleaned their keyboard less than once a month.

To clear out bugs, the magazine recommends users unplug keyboards, turn them upside down and shake them.

D'oh!

So I took this opportunity to shake it out and saturate it with hospital strength End-Bac II Disinfectant Spray , which will kill EVERYTHING (probably including me based on the MSDS.)

You might want to take this opportunity to clean your own.

100 E-mail Bouncebacks? You've Been Backscattered.

QUOTE
The bounceback e-mail messages come in at a trickle, maybe one or two every hour. The subject lines are disquieting: "Cyails, Vygara nad Levytar," "UNSOLICITED BULK EMAIL, apparently from you."

You eye your computer screen; you're nervous. What's going on ? Have you been hacked? Are you some kind of zombie botnet spammer?

Nope, you're just getting a little backscatter-- bounceback messages from legitimate e-mail servers that have been fooled by the spammers.

Spammers like to put fake information in their e-mail messages in order to sneak them past e-mail filters. Because e-mail filters now just delete messages that come from nonexistent domains, the spammers like to make their messages look like they come from real e-mail addresses. That means, if your e-mail address has been published on the Web somewhere, you're a prime candidate for backscattering.

The spammer finds your address, or sometimes even guesses it, and then puts it in the "from" line of his messages, sending them out to hundreds of thousands of recipients. When the spam gets sent to an address that is no longer active, it can sometimes be bounced back... to you.

Although Sophos estimates that backscatter makes up just two percent or three percent of all spam, antispam vendors say these messages are on the rise lately.

While backscatter is extremely hard to filter out, it is a problem that can be fixed.

Backscatter comes in three varieties: messages from mail servers, saying that there is no such user available; "out of office" automated reply messages; and so-called challenge-response messages, which tell the sender that his message will be delivered only once he responds to the bounceback and confirms that the e-mail is coming from a legitimate address.

Security experts say that people should simply stop using these last two types of bounceback messages.

As for "no such user" bouncebacks, that can be fixed too. There are a few e-mail standards that could help with the problem: Variable Envelope Return Path(VERP) and Bounce Address Tag Validation (BATV), for example.

I average about 1-3 of these "backskatter" emails a week. I wondered what the story was... It appears there is some kind of fix, but I'm sure I'll never get to it.

File under the heading "No Good Deed Goes Unpunished"

Decided to surprise wife and daughters with their own laptops. In the process of transferring data using a file and data transfer utility whereby one computer acts as a harddrive for the other - disaster. All was well until time to disconnect the computers. Last step was disconnect cable and turn off old machine. Now the old computer will not turn on - had been running 24/7 without a hitch for 2.5 years. In the shop today at the new simplyMac store where the laptops were bought - of course the 3 yr warranty is over - we'll see what comes on Monday.

I look over in time to see her disable a McCaffe virus alert and she started downloading 6 toolbars. Not good. Some things she didn't even plan on using. A weather alert?? It took a long time and a few programs to get rid of that sheit. She got a quick introduction into viruses. She was at that myspace site. They hooked her in with a cute cartoon.

McCaffee isn't bad but you can't disable it. grrrr......

The new comp is fast as heck, I think mostly because there's no bloatware on it. If you have the McAffee Security Center you can shut off parts of it if need be. I have the firewall shut off on one comp because it has a different firewall on and two conflict.
Davis 2.0
I like the pc maintenance tools that come with McCafee. They seem to make a big difference.
Arturo_Vandelay
I use it because it's free, but it really is pretty good. The one pain is it tries to scan my whole comp all the time and the scan takes up all my resources. When this new comp fills up and needs a 700 Gig scan it's going to take a week.

Free updates and all that is nice. AVG's fine, but somehow something that's truly free I trust a little less.

Woman Helps Cops Find Men Who Stole Her Laptop

QUOTE
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) -- A Westchester woman who had her laptop stolen was able to connect to the computer, photograph two suspects and give the photos to police.

White Plains Police say they used the photos to arrest Edmon Shahikian, 23, of Katonah and 20-year-old Ian Frias of the Bronx Wednesday night. Police say they recovered most of the $5,000 worth of electronics stolen from the woman's White Plains apartment back on April 27.

Police say the woman was called from a friend asking if she was online.

The victim said no and was told by the friend that her computer showed her as being on the Internet.

At that point the victim signed onto another computer and used the "Back to My Mac" program to determine that her stolen MacIntosh laptop was on the Web.

She then used the stolen computer's camera to photograph Shahikian.

I wonder if the method the woman used could be turned on her. That is, I wonder if someone else could get into a person's laptop and take pictures of them without their knowledge.
