"Our" (if I may -- broadly) huge issue will be keeping the fora fresh & vital as opposed to rehashed & personal. That was what C-SPAN did offer, over time -- new blood (as I said once, jokingly, though in retrospect it may have been rather true) because we drank all the old blood.
I don't have any "ideas" on how to do that -- only a perception that it is a good thing, and a singular advantage C-SPAN offers.
It takes little contemplation to see how many posters & personalities are needed & missed.
But -- I say let it play out & develop.

I think about it all the time. The opportunity to post new topics should allow us to minimize the rehash part if people are interested. New blood I can't do alone. I tried to get as many as possible on the backup, but the disadvantage of a special Yahoo ID is that people don't always check it. I know I only check my good Yahoo every couple days, my C-Span even less. Loclynn mailed a bunch of people and everyone who was on the boards the last hours was invited. A couple people have invited new people, but to my knowledge they haven't posted.

Well if anyone is willing to beg them further I'm good with that. I'm not the type to pester, but pretty much everyone is welcome and has been invited, if not personally. You have moderator priveledge on the backup so the email addys are available.
Maybe the final answer is only in C-Span reopening, but we have time to consider the problem now that we didn't on Friday afternoon.

New blood aside, there is a clubbish element here that is unavoidable. The exhibitionist appeal (perhaps more perception than reality) of cspan is lost.
In the meantime, this is working swimmingly, Arturo. And it could be very useful as a back room if and when cspan reopens with a more controlled format.

You can edit out any content for starters. Admin can delete them completely as well as moderators(which we don't have yet). The moderator aspect we can discuss. I'd be willing to discuss someone becoming a moderator of a major topic area if anypone is interested. That would require someone who is dedicated to advancing the site's interests rather than only their own political agenda.
My general thought is to administer as a means of cleaning things up and making them interesting rather than as a means of censorship or deciding the boards political balance. So far it seems to be no worse than C-Span civility-wise, except the lack of a filter means no need to post silly acronyms, or use subversion techniques. If you are that offended by the real thing you probably are just as offended at the use of three quarters of the real thing and an *.

I allowed guests to see but not post on only the political board temporarily. That is so they might see what is going on and maybe join. Since there are probably 75 members in the Yahoo groups I was hoping to entice a non-poster or two inside.
The anon poster is a separate option and is a regular member. I always know who it is because it's always the SAME member.
Do you think I should go back to only showing the topic headers, forum headers or what? I'm open to suggestion.

No, actually I'd appreciate some new blood here. We're sort of an incestuous little group.
Have you considered giving "guest" posting privileges for a day or two, and see what happens? Read-only isn't really much fun.
(And any way for you to tell how many different "guests" we've had?)

OK. I'll see if the permission mask works correctly. It doesn't seem to for attachments(and I kind of like it that way)
If we get any guests tell them posting privelege is temporary and to sign up if they like posting. I sent an invite to Grigorri today. At least want to give a few days for him to check it out if he'd like.

It's no problem either way. Personally I use the same prefix for my yahoo and aol so the yahoo gets all the spam. Then a yahoo just for groups. After riverdragon made some scurrilous accusations I just prefer to reiterate to all that there are ways to avoid me having anything personal.
Politics aside, outside of one invite each to several spanners I haven't pestered anyone or invaded anyone's privacy just so people could feel safer about the backup and this site.

Invision just released a new rebuild. Maybe it's included.
Of course then I'd have to figure out how to upgrade.

I guess you might as well return our little things at the bottom that show who's on. Seems like the recent slowness was due to upgrade or server problems, because I saw 10 guests on today with no noticeable slowing of the board.
I can only speak for myself, but I value the "who's on" lists. Sometimes, when I've made a post I expect to generate response (given my own inflated ego), I stay on paying attention if I see that someone who's opinion I value is also on.
Case in point: I'm lingering right now because I see Russ on, and I just made a post about Marines and morality, so I'm waiting till he replies or leaves, to see if he has a comment on it.

OK. I think they're on now. I didn't think it was the main problem, but I did want to give any advantage while the server was down. We share a server with 9 or 10 other sites so anything could have been the problem. Once in a while stuff just happens. With the slowness of summer setting in hopefully seeing less people on won't actually cause a slowdown. I know hunin is on vacation and Carol A has been working on a house and will soon be going in vacation, and people just have a lot more going on.
