1)I've been thinking for days about the divide between the Red/Blue, liberal and conservative pseudo civil war that's raging in the country.
There seems to be such a difference in the way two people can look at something and come to completely different conclusions.
People on both sides seem to be sincere in their beliefs and neither side can figure out what the opposition is missing.
I remembered a book I read years ago about the world being divided between people dominated by different sides of their brains. Right or left brain dominence.
Sooo, I found a small test you can take and it decides which side of the brain is dominent by the answers you give. (be honest)
Maybe that's what the difference is. We should also tell if we're left or right handed. That may tell us something, too.
If it ends up that all the conservatives are one side and the libs the other, we may have the start of reconciliation.
http://brain.web-us.com/brain/LRBrain.html2)Fair enough.
Hobbes, however, didn't seem to have the benefit of Hayek's insights as to how and why the worst aspects of humankind and human nature, are those which will invariably end up making it to the top levels of societies where politics controlls all.
A couple of synopses:
http://www.scs.unr.edu/~tenney/why.htmhttp://liberalorder.typepad.com/the_libera..._was_right.html3) Left vs Right/Which Side Are You On?, Which side of your brain dominates?
Hobbes, Hayek, FEMA, SS, Medicare, Medicaid, states, gubmints, hoi polloi, Libertarians, retirement.
I am against anything that disturbs the status quo equilibrium.
4) Which Side Do You Use?
You responded as a right brained person to 6 questions, and you responded as a left brained person to 12questions. According to the Hemispheric Dominance test, you use your left brain the most.
5) When you think of something be sure to share. My wife is left-handed and I always wondered if that had to do with some of her strange logic. Not intelligence per se, but the way she arrived at certain actions or conclusions.
6) I've noticed that I do think differently than my right handed friends. I have NO spacial ability at all. I have to see something in front of me, I can't see things in the abstract.
I think sometimes the attraction to Mr. Spock on Star Trek for me was his ability to think logically, without the passions of the moment. I think like that and my hubby says it's an "I don't give a sh!t attitude" but it's not that. I think I try to figure out the logic of what's being said or being done. He's Polish and volatile at times, over nothing, really and it just seems silly to me and he gets all fired up. It just doesn't seem logical to get upset over things that you have no control over.
It's hard to explain but just everything you touch is backward. When you're really young you learn to adapt, as every single thing you do is the wrong direction. My pet peeve is the ladle at the salad bar. When you pick it up for dressing the little pour spout is up instead of down to pour it out, so you just dump it. Silly, but annoying.
I don't know what makes the difference but I know that lefties do process info in a different way. I think they are more logical than daydreamy. Like me trying to figure out the difference between the red/blue divide. I'm trying to find a LOGICAL answer for something that seems so ridiculous. American's hating each other because of their politics seems so .........illogical.
7) Speedy & I would actually mean two more for the majority...
Whereas the results of AV's political philosophy test "matched" fairly closely what we see here on the board, the results of this test go against anything I've read on the subject.
I'd question the accuracy of the test at this point.
8) I think you're right. I thought that maybe if the far right used one side and the far left the other, there would be a connection. I'll have to dig that book up again and see what else is involved.
That test is really just a small sample of what would be needed to really investigate this theory, but people wouldn't take the time.
It's fun to see how everybody is so different in how the numbers come out.
I'll keep thinking.
9) I'm was looking to see if the dominence of the left or right brain would explain the way people are processing and understanding the politics that are dividing us into hate groups. The reasoning behind the hate. Why would I as a liberal hate and detest a conservative average American. I can see why I would hate and detest the conservative power structure that I strongly disagree with, but cannot understand the conservative/liberal hate spewed at each other. None of us has any power whatsoever to change anything that's being done in our name. NONE.
So my calling you names and hating everything you stand for and yo mama, does what??
I'm at a loss to understand this and am trying to find a method of reconciliation that might work. Maybe on this board. Then my town, then America and then THE WORLD!!!!
Well, that was a little over the top, but do you get my drift??
10) Judy,
I went back to the beginning of this thread and kept track of where I am on this.
BEASTY 17 LEFT 1 RIGHT
CSH 16 LEFT 2 RIGHT
JUDY 13 LEFT 5 RIGHT
SPEED 12 LEFT 6 RIGHT
NORM 12 LEFT 6 RIGHT
BIX 11 LEFT 7 RIGHT
AV 10 LEFT 8 RIGHT
ME 10 LEFT 8 RIGHT
SPACE 9 LEFT 9 RIGHT
Well, I guess AV's right. We'd need more non-political types. Bee, I would think would be more right brained because she's an artist.
I'll keep reading and see if I can figure this out. So far my test has only confused me more. And that isn't hard to do.
11) "What am I, chopped liver"? HUNIN
12) There you are... I had to read through the thread...
Hunin: 12L/6R... that's not chopped liver...
13) "Which brain side is chopped liver"? CHARLIErAY
" I'm 11L-7R... did I win anything"?
14) HUNIN "Am right handed but left eyed.
That said, can eat a sandwich w/either hand."
"As I recall having to choose among 2 imprecise answers is also part of the test.
I prefer to sit on the aisle, right or left side I don't care. I prefer a center aisle."
15) "I think this test needs to have more than twenty questions"
16)hunin,
Please accept my deepest apology. I must have scanned right past your post.
Writing and scanning is hard work. Kind of like walking and chewing gum.
So here's the new breakdown:
BEASTY 17 LEFT 1 RIGHT
CSH 16 LEFT 2 RIGHT
JUDY 13 LEFT 5 RIGHT
HUMAN 12 LEFT 6 RIGHT
HUNIN 12 LEFT 6 RIGHT
SPEED 12 LEFT 6 RIGHT
NORM 12 LEFT 6 RIGHT
CHARLEY 11 LEFT 7 RIGHT
BIX 11 LEFT 7 RIGHT
BUNTZIE 10 LEFT 8 RIGHT
AV 10 LEFT 8 RIGHT
ME 10 LEFT 8 RIGHT
SPACE 9 LEFT 9 RIGHT
So there it is. Charley suprises me. But, I'm still doing research. And lots of deep thinking staring at the lake. Nice day today, for a change. Humidity dropped and the temp finally went down.
Well, back to the books.
17) I'd be interested in knowing what Speedy and Tom score, to see if libertarians score differently than most.
18) I think they score a little better than geeks, but not as good as jocks.
19) No, what I was curious about is that Sherry's site claims that right-brainedness is associated with outside the box thinking and creativity, so I was curious of our libertarians score significantly differently than most of us, as you did (with your own outside-the-box sense of humor and somewhat libertarian leanings).
20) Er, RB "Right 10, Left 8."
21) Bart Katz--10/8
22) AV "Speed scores the same as hunin, though I'm not sure he's a libertarian.
This brain-side thing doesn't seem to equate well to discerning political views".
23) cspanjunky "wouldn't it be a hoot if someone got
0=right/ 18=left
(yikes)
maybe i didn't read it correctly
hmm"
24) AV "Beasty was pretty close, with CSH right behind.
I'd be more interested to see an all right brain."
25) Good grief, I should add dyslexia to all my other problems.
Let's try again:
BEASTY 17 LEFT 1 RIGHT
CSH 16 LEFT 2 RIGHT
JUDY 13 LEFT 5 RIGHT
HUMAN 12 LEFT 6 RIGHT
HUNIN 12 LEFT 6 RIGHT
SPEED 12 LEFT 6 RIGHT
NORM 12 LEFT 6 RIGHT
CHARLEY 11 LEFT 7 RIGHT
BIX 11 LEFT 7 RIGHT
AV 10 LEFT 8 RIGHT
ME 10 LEFT 8 RIGHT
SPACE 9 LEFT 9 RIGHT
BUNTZIE 8 LEFT 10 RIGHT
He is the odd man out so far. I'd love to see lil bart and bee's scores. They are more artistic and volatile. ? So far this doesn't tell me much. I'm still reading.
28) I'm right handed.
If you wanna see a "real lefty" ---talk the creative davis into participation. I'm on vacation, too. Been to Gettysburg, Washington D.C. and now in Florida.
29) Me and my ole bud Bix is like peas in a pod(someone said that already, didn't they?:~)...
The test is strange... but we all took the same test... so we have a standard... and we have a trend... though it's not what we expected... it's really quite wonderful, isn't it?... to find that we are all not so different afterall...
--------------------
CharlieRay
30) Take the test davis, I betcha you're more "lefty" than me!
31) Davis 13 " 12 right 6 left "
32) Damn pragmatic, "show-me" realist!
33) D13 " I'd rather sit in the center at the theater. I don't dance. a lot of them could go one way or the other."
34) The latest update:
BEASTY 17 LEFT 1 RIGHT
CSH 16 LEFT 2 RIGHT
BEE 15 LEFT 3 RIGHT
JUDY 13 LEFT 5 RIGHT
HUMAN 12 LEFT 6 RIGHT
HUNIN 12 LEFT 6 RIGHT
SPEED 12 LEFT 6 RIGHT
NORM 12 LEFT 6 RIGHT
CHARLEY 11 LEFT 7 RIGHT
BIX 11 LEFT 7 RIGHT
AV 10 LEFT 8 RIGHT
ME 10 LEFT 8 RIGHT
SPACE 9 LEFT 9 RIGHT
BUNTZIE 8 LEFT 10 RIGHT
DAVIS 6 LEFT 12 RIGHT
davis, are you left or right handed?? I'm trying to keep track of that, too. So far I'm the only lefty in the crowd. I usually am. You are an artist and I figured the more artistic you are the more the right brain would come into use.
I haven't figured out what part of the brain makes one a political fanatic, but I'm still reading.
35) D13 "Right." "I find it odd I'm on one end of the spectrum.
There were 3 or 4 (at least) that could have gone either way."
36) All of us had some questions that could have gone one way or another, but we're sticking with the one we chose. It must be the closest to the truth.
Right handed. OK. Thanks.
Yes, you are kind of out there, all by yourself, on the edge. All great artists were one of a kind, like you.
37) D13 " oh boy. Not sure what to think of that. No ear cutting though!
The irony of it is that to the artist's community in Peoria I was a whacked out, gun-owning, rightwing freak. I scared half of them to death.
Weird."
38) Space Cowboy "Of course there are drawbacks to every measuring scheme, some of which you have noted above.
Ultimately, these tests are judged on their ability to follow actual, known, results. In that regard, correlation statistics matter the most.
Unless you can demonstrate something better, of course."
39) DeKazz "I initially took the test a few days ago, just out of curiosity. Don't remember exactly what I scored, but was definitely left brain dominant.
I took the test again today, scored lt 13/rt 5.
But, then I read some of the stuff on the website about characteristics etc, and something didn't sound right to me. I seem to have more rt-brain traits than the test indicated. So, I found the test key, where it says which answer means rt and which answer means lft. The answers that I actually gave on the test should have given me a score of lt 10/rt 8.
Has anyone else checked into the accuracy of their test scores" ?
40) AV "If it's a test about how your brain operates it makes sense that some of the questions are subjective ones about how you think. I suppose we could scan the peabrains around here and see if and where those neurons are firing, but this test seem to me to be a bit easier and more cost effective. It's not like it's an IQ test that we could fail in front of everyone."
"The whole thing looked pretty detailed so I took the easy way out and just posted my score so Sherry could worry about divining meanings. I always considered myself pretty logical and I have no artistic talent to speak of(but I have a great ear for music).
Dunno where it all leads. I was hoping Sherry would tell me."
41) TomServo " There're are much better tests than the one being presently duscussed. Myers-Briggs comes immediately to mind. Yet most of the ones I've come across treat their results as definitive. As though one's given favored responses transcend all possible contexts.
Personally, the most complete and unbiased attempt at mapping one's possible or probable responses I've encountered, is through the use of what NLP calls "Meta-patterns". Some of them are in the first of my posts on this topic."
42)The latest update:
BEASTY 17 LEFT 1 RIGHT
CSH 16 LEFT 2 RIGHT
BEE 15 LEFT 3 RIGHT
DEKAZZ 13 LEFT 5 RIGHT
JUDY 13 LEFT 5 RIGHT
HUMAN 12 LEFT 6 RIGHT
HUNIN 12 LEFT 6 RIGHT
SPEED 12 LEFT 6 RIGHT
NORM 12 LEFT 6 RIGHT
CHARLEY 11 LEFT 7 RIGHT
BIX 11 LEFT 7 RIGHT
AV 10 LEFT 8 RIGHT
ME 10 LEFT 8 RIGHT
SPACE 9 LEFT 9 RIGHT
BUNTZIE 8 LEFT 10 RIGHT
DAVIS 6 LEFT 12 RIGHT
Dekazz, I took your first score because that's what we all did. We can't have people going back and redoing their score or I'll never get finished.
This is a simple test, just to see if there's a pattern, not to study everyones neurology.
43) I've already objected to the Political Compass test on the same grounds--the forced choice. On several of those questions, my answer were I free to give it would have been neither agree nor disagree, but rather "I challenge the question".
A lot of the questions contained modifiers like "always" and "never", and I was (and still am) uncertain how you "somewhat disagree" with a 'never' question.
44) Dekazz "Okay, so you guys tickled my brain (all of it), and I did a little bit of research.
First, I found another Rt/Lft dominance test that is not binary, I haven't taken it yet, but here is the link:
http://www.learningpaths.org/questionnaire...est/lrquest.htmMight be interesting to see if or how much the format changes the results.
Second, I did a little searching on the 'net, and the first thing I noticed is that the most common results are web pages that are either selling their 'system' for 'utilizing your whole brain', identifying your 'dominant' side and learning how to use your non-dominant side. In other words, the most common results are popularizations and commercial sites (lots of educational sites, geared towards urging teachers to identify dominance of their students, and giving 'how-to' advice on teaching students based on their dominant side), and very few scientific sites or articles. Of the scientific sites that I found, virtually all cast doubt on the accuracy of the popular interpretations of the available research. Many pointed out that the popular interpretations are based largely on very early research, and that more recent research points to much greater communication and sharing of tasks between the hemispheres. Here are a couple of links, to interesting articles:
http://www.rense.com/general2/rb.htmhttp://williamcalvin.com/bk2/bk2ch10.htmDisclaimer: I am not familiar with either of these sites, the first is a real grab bag of, shall we say, unusual news releases and commentary. The second at least claims to be written by a neurophysicist or some such.
Anyway, I am very skeptical of the whole proposition."
