ACORN has hired the former Attorney General of The Marx to investigate itself.

Scott Harshbarger hired to conduct ACORN inquiry
By Thomas Grillo

E-mail Print (54) Comments Text size Share Buzz up!Former Massachusetts Attorney General Scott Harshbarger has been hired by ACORN to conduct an inquiry into the organization on the heels of a video that appears to show employees advising a couple posing as a prostitute and pimp to lie about the source of their income to get housing assistance.

Harshbarger, an attorney at Proskauer Rose LLP, is also the former president and chief executive of Common Cause, the good government organization.

“I have been asked by the leadership of ACORN to conduct an independent and comprehensive inquiry and review of the management of its service delivery to communities,” Harshbarger said in a statement. “The CEO and board have also asked me to make a full report, including recommendations for restoring ACORN’s full capacities to carry out its mission on behalf of low- and moderate-income families.”

In the meantime, ACORN has suspended accepting clients into its service programs for working-poor families including tax preparation, housing assistance programs, and benefits screening until the independent review is completed.

ACORN, a community organization whose mission is to end poverty, was founded in 1970 and has chapters in 75 cities including Boston. The group has come under fire since Fox News released videos secretly taken by undercover operatives posing as a prostitute and her companion seeking tax and housing advice at five ACORN offices.

Arizona has been exposed as a corrupt organization

Sixteen Arizona corrections employees have been fired, suspended or otherwise disciplined for their role in the death of an inmate left in an outdoor holding cell for four hours in triple-digit heat.

QUOTE
Marcia Powell, 48, died from heat-related complications hours after she collapsed May 19 in an uncovered outdoor cell. She had been in the cell for nearly four hours, despite a policy that set a two-hour limit.

Powell had first- and second-degree burns on her face and body and a core body temperature of 108 degrees, an autopsy report said.

...the wording in the legislation was so broad that the provision also applies to "any organization that has been charged with breaking federal or state election laws, lobbying disclosure laws, campaign finance laws or filing fraudulent paperwork with any federal or state agency. It also applies to any of the employees, contractors or other folks affiliated with a group charged with any of those things."

That covers a lot of territory. Turns out the bill was drafted so as to target groups which may have had run-ins similar to those chronicled in the recordings. But let's recall that several big contractors have had run-ins with the law where their employees were charged with fraud.

Here's the Federal Contractor Misconduct Database which lists the names of contractors who have histories of misconduct. It's a veritable Who's Who of Corporate America. As the Project On Government Oversight points out, "Lockheed Martin, which has 11 government contract fraud instances, or Northrop Grumman with 9 contract fraud instances including this $325 million False Claims Act settlement from earlier this year."

By contrast, Acorn is said to have received a total of $53 million in federal funds since 1994. Bad behavior doesn't excuse other bad behavior but there was no shortage of schadenfreude as the news spread.

States aim at ACORN, but little money at stake
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090923/ap_on_...XRlc2FpbWF0YQ--

As support for the community activist group ACORN withered in Congress in the wake of a hidden-camera scandal, Republican governors and other state officials moved swiftly to sever ties. It turns out the group often commanded little — if any — state business.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, seen as a possible 2012 GOP presidential candidate, directed his budget commissioner to stop all state funding to ACORN except where "the state is legally obligated to provide such funding." None of Minnesota's money was going to the group, and hadn't for more than a year.

An order from Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, also seen as a possible 2012 contender, resulted in blocking two possible ACORN social services contracts worth a combined $13,750.

ACORN's loss of federal contracts will cost it millions, but an Associated Press survey found 37 states with no known active ties to the group and just one current contract: $365,000 for foreclosure counseling in New York, now on hold pending a 30-day review ordered by Democratic Gov. David Paterson. Officials in five other states still were checking their databases . . .
underhi2p

When the funding measure first passed Congress, "I thought ACORN could survive. But I underestimated the effect ... and its consequences with our other sources of funding," Lewis said. "We want to comply with every investigation, but we cannot comply if we do not have staff and are closing our offices."

If Congress doesn't pussy-out and reverse its decision, I'd say Congress' decision to eliminate taxpayers' monies to fund A.C.O.R.N. is one of the best decisions its ever made.
